FESS (SINUS) SURGERY

What are the type of sinuses?

Not all patients will sinuses get surgery done. There are 2 types of sinuses. Acute or Chronic.

Acute: What we call acute is the most common sinus infection where patients get nasal discharge and fever. Acute infection cause a headache, runny nose, fatigue and fever. Treated with medicine and nose blow.

Chronic: Chronic sinuse patients are not treated with the medicine. It will require a surgery.
How do we decide on Sinus Surgery?
1- Sinus Tomography will be done to patients who have continuos nasal discharge, nasal drip, blocked nose, headache complaints. Surgery will be
required if we see an infection or deterioration of the airway in sinuses.
2- FESS surgery should be performed to patients who have nasal polyps. Surgery will carry out the nasal polyps in sinuses.
Note: We do not operate any sinus patients without Tomography results.
How do they operate FESS Surgery?
Mostly under local anaesthesia. Nasal endoscopy used to reach out the infected sinuses and remove the diseased area. Post operative surgery, all
sinuses get to normal aeration.
Do they use special tools during surgery?
Yes. SHAVER device is being used since its first use in Turkey (15 years ago). Classic surgeries performed by plucking the diseased area meanwhile
SHAVER that we use detect and vacuums the infected area just like a shaving machine, sensitive enough to not damage the uninfected area.
Balloon Sinuplasty used to treat patients who have one blocked sinuses. However these operations are very rare.
Is it possible to get FESS surgery along with other surgery?
Most of the time FESS patients have also deviation and concha hypertrophy problems. We can perform FESS surgery while fixing the cartilage
deviation and performing concha surgeries.
We can also treat patients who had prior nose surgery and have cerebrospinal fluid running from their nose. We use nasal endoscopy to fix the area.

After the operation, will I get a sinus problem again?
Important to note: successful operation does not make the patient’s sinus better than others. Sinus infection can occur to anyone who had a surgery
and those who have not. Acute sinuses, flu and cold will be the common nasal complications and they will be treated by medicine and rest. The same
conditions that apply to healthy people also apply to the ones who had sinus surgery.
After the operation, will I be able to smell?
Polyp or chronic infection blocking the odor nerve endings is the reason and can be fixed with surgery so that our patients can smell again.
Would it be possible to remove polyps by surgery?
Successful FESS operation can stop polyps from reoccurring.

The reasons for reoccurring are:
Not removing /cleaning the all polyps. Allergic reasons causing symptoms to reoccur and this needs to be treated. After the surgery, patients will be

educated to get protected and treated for allergy.
How Successful is Sinus Surgery?
Doctor’s experience is the number one criteria that affects the success of the operation. By using Tomography, all the infected sinuses & tissues need
to be removed. If doctor cannot reach out to sinuses that are difficult to reach, then sinus problem will re-occur. Serious complications can happen if
not as experienced doctor forces to reach out to difficult areas. We generally perform on patients who had 4-5 times sinus surgeries and still suffering
from the disease.
There are 3 things matter the most:
Doctor’s experience
Shaver Device: since it doesn’t touch the healthy area, easy to recover post surgery.
Post surgery care and recovery: Medicine given post surgery and its dosage helps the recovery and send patient back to normal. Periodical follow-ups are critical to arrange the dosage of the medicine.
